We all know that the best investment in small business that you can make is on your employees.

Sitting in our Melbourne office yesterday, we were all thankful that the airconditioning didn’t fail in the 43 degree heat. I, in particular, was very thankful! You don’t want a bunch of employees trying to be motivated and get their jobs done all hot and bothered, do you? There is nothing more uncomfortable then trying to do your work whilst you are sweating. Ughh!

The heat does extraordinary things to people; sends them crazy, they faint, they talk alot (mainly about the heat), they feel exhausted and pretty much would do anything (including hocking off their xmas gifts) to cool down.

It’s a New Year… as I keep saying, and what better time to take a few minutes out and do something special for your employees.

If you are a small business, it costs very little to race out and buy everyone an ice block or an ice cold slush puppy (does anyone remember these?).

Put a picture on their desks of the snow or people freezing in New York. The idea being if they look at something cool, they will think about what it would be like to be there. It’s mind over matter.

Let your office workers wear casual, cool clothing. Does it really matter that they don’t come dressed in their designer suits for a couple of days?

Or perhaps a fruit platter or a light meal. Nothing too heavy. When it’s hot, there is nothing better than eating healthy fruit that is slightly chilled.

Think of ways you can cool down your staff and let them know that you care that the heat may be affecting them.

Remember, many of them may have had a sleepless night because they don’t have airconditioning, so something small could just make their day.
